Ashington Honours 80th Anniversary of D-Day Landings with Commemorative Flag

As the nation prepares to mark the 80th anniversary of the historic Normandy Landings, Ashington Town Council has announced plans to raise a special commemorative flag in tribute to the brave men and women who fought for freedom and peace during World War II.

On June 5th and 6th of this year, a series of major commemorations will take place across the UK and France, honouring the courageous Allied personnel who risked their lives during the D-Day invasions of Normandy in 1944. This pivotal campaign played a crucial role in liberating Western Europe from Nazi occupation.

Recognising the significance of this milestone anniversary, Ashington Town Council will proudly raise the commemorative flag as a powerful symbol of remembrance and gratitude. The flag will fly prominently, serving as a visual reminder of the sacrifices made by the soldiers, sailors, and airmen who took part in the daring Normandy Landings.

Cllr Mark Purvis, Business Chair of Ashington Town Council, stated, "The 80th anniversary of the Normandy Landings is a poignant occasion that deserves our utmost respect and recognition. By raising this commemorative flag, we honour the extraordinary bravery and unwavering determination of those who fought to restore liberty and democracy to Europe."

The flag-raising will take place on Thursday 6th June, at 10am, in Ashington Memorial Garden, and members of the public are invited to attend and pay their respects to the fallen heroes of D-Day and partake in a moment of silence to reflect on the immense sacrifices made during one of the most pivotal battles of World WarII.

In recognition of the anniversary of the D-Day landings, the Ashington Branch of the Royal British Legion invites all to join them in remembrance. A memorial service will be conducted on Sunday 9th June at 2pm within the Ashington Memorial Garden. Father Chris will lead the service and tributes to honour the valiant sacrifices of those who stormed the Normandy beaches, securing liberty at a most arduous cost. Let us unite in this sacred observance to pay homage to the heroes who rallied for our freedom on that fateful day.
