A Clean Green Ashington

Ashington Town Council are committed to making Ashington an even better place to live, work and visit.

Working together with the help of Community Groups, Schools, Businesses and Residents we aim to make the Town a cleaner, tidier place to be, with a more positive environmental outlook.
 

Litter

Keeping the country’s streets clean cost local councils almost £700 million last year. Much of this is avoidable litter, and money that could be better spent in the community.

The maximum on-the-spot fine for littering and graffiti has almost doubled from £80 to £150, and for the first time, local authorities can also use these littering penalties against vehicle owners if it can be proved litter was thrown from their car. The appearance of the town has a huge impact on residents and visitors.  One way of ensuring the town is clean and tidy is by working together organising community litter picks.

Waste collection and recycling are carried out in Ashington by Northumberland County Council.

Sorting your waste at home.

Recycling bin - paper, cartons and cardboard

Rubbish bin - any items that cannot be recycled such as food waste, plastics other than plastic bottles and nappies.

Garden bin - for all garden waste. Subscribers pay per bin per season.

Donating to Local Charities

As you're cleaning out your house and sorting through your belongings, keep in mind that many local charities gratefully accept donations of gently used items. You can donate more than just money. Consider giving your good condition clothes, books, household items, small pieces of furniture, and other goods to any of the many charitable organisations near you.  These items will find new homes and help others in need. Check with the specific charities in your area about what types of donations they are able to accept. And know that your unwanted items can still bring joy to others in your local community.

Being a Responsible Dog Owner

While the majority of dog owners are respectful about cleaning up after their pets, there is an unfortunate minority who do not pick up their dog's waste. Dog fouling in public spaces is not only an unsightly nuisance, but also poses health risks to people and other animals. As a community, we must encourage all dog owners to be responsible in immediately picking up and properly disposing their dog's poo. It is simply part of having and caring for a pet. By being considerate of our shared public areas, we can make our neighbourhood cleaner and safer for everyone who lives and plays here. If you observe irresponsible dog owners failing to pick up after their pets, you can notify the appropriate local authorities. But most importantly, we must lead by example and demonstrate what it means to be a thoughtful, attentive dog owner.
