Ashington Town Council fund Christmas cheer with grant to Wansbeck Christmas Campaign

Ashington Town Council has awarded a £500 grant to the Wansbeck Christmas Campaign in support of their efforts to provide gifts for struggling families across the Wansbeck area this festive season.

The grant was used to shop for gifts from the campaign's Christmas list at the B&M store on Freeman Way. Store employees Michael and Kelly provided first class assistance in the shopping effort and were full of Christmas cheer. The purchased gifts were delivered directly to volunteer Vicky, ready for sorting and distributing mid-December.

The Wansbeck Christmas Campaign works to collect and buy presents for disadvantaged families who are identified by social services, schools, health visitors and through a self-referral system. Last year the campaign provided gifts to over 600 children, including 230 in Ashington. Families receive age-appropriate new gifts for each child.

The campaign operates out of the Pegswood Fire Station, where they use a donated room as a base for operations from November through mid-December each year.

Ashington Town Council's grant comes from the Small Grant pot of £20,000 which awards funding of £500 throughout the year. There have been three rounds in this financial year, with the final round set to open on 15th January 2024.
