Northumberland County of Sanctuary Hosts Vibrant International Day

Northumberland County of Sanctuary (NCOS) brought the community together for a day of celebration and cultural exchange at their recent International Day event. Held on Saturday, September 21st at St. Andrews Church, the gathering was a testament to the organisation's commitment to fostering inclusivity and support for those seeking sanctuary in the county.

Deputy Civic Head Cllr Sophie Robinson was among the esteemed guests, joining in the festivities that included a variety of fun activities and games. Reflecting on the event, Cllr Robinson shared, "It was a pleasure to attend the International Day hosted by Northumberland County of Sanctuary. The atmosphere was truly vibrant, and it was heartening to see our community come together to celebrate diversity and inclusion. Events like these showcase the best of Northumberland's welcoming spirit."

NCOS, a registered charity, operates on the ethos of City of Sanctuary and is run entirely by dedicated volunteers. The organisation prides itself on being a true community effort, with people seeking sanctuary forming an integral part of the NCOS family.

"Our community is the true NCOS," stated a spokesperson for the organisation. "We're not just working for those seeking sanctuary, but with them. They are a crucial part of our executive committee, helping to guide our day-to-day operations alongside our trustees and other concerned individuals."

The charity is governed by a board of trustees, currently eight strong, with room to expand to twelve. While the trustees oversee legal obligations, the heart of NCOS beats through its diverse executive committee, which includes asylum seekers and individuals with leave to remain.

At the core of NCOS's mission is the desire to help those in need. The organisation relies heavily on community support to achieve its goals and create positive change. Events like the International Day serve not only as a celebration but also as a call to action for more community members to get involved.
