Northumberland Line Update: Passenger Services Coming Soon
The Northumberland Line project continues to make significant progress, with several recent milestones achieved:
- Northern Trains completed the first full test run of the line, with a train traveling from Newcastle Central to Ashington. This marks an important step as Northern prepares to launch passenger services later this year.
- Safety improvements have been made to pedestrian and equestrian level crossings along the route, including the addition of warning lights and audible signals.
- Community engagement efforts have continued, with the project team supporting local initiatives and hosting events, such as a community day at the Mares Close Level Crossing.
Looking ahead, construction work is progressing at the various station locations, including Northumberland Park, Seaton Delaval, Newsham, Blyth Bebside, Bedlington, and Ashington. Upcoming road closures are planned to facilitate this work.
When the Northumberland Line opens, it will provide a new 35-minute direct rail link between Ashington and Newcastle, with services running every 30 minutes during the day and hourly in the evenings and on weekends. Integrated ticketing with the Tyne and Wear Metro system will also be available.
