Local Scrapstore Transforms Waste into Creative Opportunities
Ashington's innovative Scrapstore service is breathing new life into discarded materials, turning potential waste into valuable resources for the community. The initiative collects reusable items from local businesses and redistributes them to charities, community organisations, and schools, fostering creativity and sustainability.
Last week, Councillor Marjorie Chambers and Ashington Town Council Officers visited the store to witness firsthand the impact of this unique service. The Scrapstore operates on a membership basis, with a nominal fee for community organisations to access the materials, ensuring the project's sustainability.
Beyond its primary mission of resource redistribution, the Scrapstore plays a crucial role in community engagement. It provides meaningful volunteering opportunities for marginalised groups in Ashington, with a particular focus on supporting adults with additional needs. These volunteers contribute to various activities, including the creation of specialized activity boxes designed for individuals with additional needs.
This innovative approach not only diverts materials from landfills but also promotes creative repurposing through arts, crafts, and technology projects. By bridging the gap between waste and want, the Northumberland Scrapstore is proving that one person's trash can indeed be another's treasure, all while fostering community spirit and inclusivity."
