Co-option Opportunity for the College Ward
Ashington Town Council has a vacancy for a Town Councillor in the College Ward, which can be filled by co-option.
Anyone wishing to join the council via co-option must be eligible under s.79 of the Local Government Act 1972, and not disqualified under s.80 of the Local Government Act 1972.
Eligibility
- British citizen, Commonwealth citizen, or a citizen of a European Union country
- 18 or over
You need one of the following four qualifications:
- You are on the electoral register for the parish.
- You have you lived either in the parish, or within three miles of its boundary, for at least a year.
- You have been the owner or tenant of land in the parish for at least a year.
- Your only or main place of work is in the parish for at least a year.
Disqualifications
- You are the subject of a bankruptcy restrictions order or interim order.
- You have you within the last five years been convicted of an offence in the UK, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man which resulted in a sentence of imprisonment (whether suspended or not) for a period of three months or more without the option of a fine.
- You are disqualified by order of a court from being a member of a local authority.

Following eligibility assurances, you will be invited to prepare a short statement on why you want to be a Councillor, and will be invited to our Annual Meeting of the Council on 28th May 2024, when the co-option will be heard, and agreed by Council.
