In July 2020, following the death of Jack Charlton, Cllr Liam Lavery acted on the outpouring of grief, locally and further afield, with the idea of a fitting tribute; a statue in his hometown Ashington. On Saturday, the aspiration that Cllr Liam Lavery shared with so many others, and which was taken forward by Ashington Town Council, will be realised.
Chair of Ashington Town Council, Cllr Mark Purvis said,
“As someone who has seen many footballing tributes and statues, I can honestly say that this is one of the best. I am proud to have been involved in this project from the start and I know that the pride I feel will be felt by everyone on Saturday. The work is exceptional, not only of the statue, but the linked project to celebrate Ashington’s Footballing Heritage. We are rightly proud of our sporting legacy and thanks to this project, we are sharing the stories, and hopefully inspiring more to come.”

Ashington Town Council has set aside a budget to enable grants to be given to groups and voluntary organisations, who would like to be able to open their doors as a ‘Warm Hub’. Or those who are already doing so, but would like to extend their offer. Funding could contribute towards room costs, transport, activities, or to providing food and drinks. The Council is open to discussing what you would like to offer and how we could help. The aim is to facilitate a good network of hubs across Ashington.
