Construction on Ashington Train Station Temporarily Halted for Holidays

The construction site for the new Ashington train station will be brought to a temporary stop over the upcoming holidays, according to a recent letter sent to residents from Neil Blagburn, Programme Delivery Director for the Northumberland Line Programme.

The site will close on December 22nd and reopen on January 2nd for a safe Christmas break. Security teams will monitor the site over this period. Residents with questions can contact Northumberland County Council.

The letter thanked residents for their patience over the last year of construction. Key progress made in 2023 included:

  • Installation of new station platform
  • Expansion of car park and access roads
  • Track renewal works
  • Upgrades to signaling systems and nearby level crossings

Additionally the project has provided over 1000 hours of educational activity to the local community, working with local schools such as Deuke's Secondary School to provide STEM support and career advice. Northumberland County Council has also worked clocley with local community and sports organisations, including sponsorship of Ashington Cricket Club women's team.

Looking ahead, new train conductors will be stationed at Ashington with Northern rail. The Northumberland Line website will have further updates on the wider project timeline. Residents can also email or call the Council number with any additional queries.

So while construction pauses over the holidays, significant progress was made this past year and more milestones are imminent in 2024 - with Ashington residents set to reap the benefits of the new station soon.
