New Bus Shelter Seating
Ashington Town Council has recently installed locally made seating at two bus shelters in the town. This project highlights the Council’s commitment to sustainability and utilising local skill, with the seats expertly crafted by Mr Tony Webster of Websters Workshop, based at Green Lane Workspace.
The new seating provides a resting place for residents while they wait for their buses, making public transport more accessible and convenient. The Council believes that such practical improvements encourage the use of public transport, contributing to greener travel choices in the town.
The seats were installed by the Town Council’s Neighbourhood Services Officers, Mark Air and Ryan Appleby. In the photograph (from left to right) is Mr Tony Webster (Webster Workshops), Cllr. Paul Wright (Chair of Ashington Town Councils Climate Change Committee) and Ryan and Mark, at the bus shelter on Briardene.
Cllr Paul Wright, said, “We are proud to deliver practical solutions that hopefully improve the daily lives of our residents while reducing environmental impact. By choosing to work with local manufacturers and installing the seats in-house, we’ve been able to save on transportation and installation costs while supporting local businesses.”
The project reflects the Council's core values of “thinking local first,” reducing costs, and promoting sustainability. Not only were the seats manufactured close to home, cutting down on transportation emissions, but the Council’s in-house team further reduced external contractor costs by installing the seats themselves.
The Council plans to assess additional bus stops in Ashington to identify where future installations can make a difference.
This initiative is about more than just comfort - it's about ensuring that our community remains well-connected and that we continue to encourage the use of public transport. By investing locally and thinking sustainably, we’re making Ashington a better place to live and work and the Town Council remains committed to using local skills and resources wherever possible.
A clean and minor repairs to a number of bus shelters around the town will take place this week.
