Ashington Family Fun Day and Walking Football Festival Scores Big with Community

Ashington's Hirst Welfare Centre buzzed with excitement last Saturday as the Family Fun Day and Walking Football Festival drew crowds of local residents and visitors. The event, supported by Ashington Town Council and co-sponsored by Northumberland County Council and the Newcastle United Foundation, was hailed as a resounding success by attendees and organisers alike.

From 10am to 3pm, the Alexandra Road venue was alive with activity, offering free entry to all who wished to join in the festivities. The day featured a diverse array of attractions.

The Walking Football Festival proved to be a particular highlight, showcasing the slower-paced version of football that has been gaining popularity among older adults and those with limited mobility. Spectators watched with enthusiasm as players of all abilities took to the field, demonstrating the inclusive nature of this adaptable sport.

In a dedicated activity zone, the Newcastle United Foundation provided additional outdoor entertainment. Visitors were seen engaging in various football-related games and exercises, all designed to promote health and wellbeing in an enjoyable manner.

Cllr Caroline Ball, Civic Head of Ashington, expressed her delight at attending the event. "It was truly wonderful to see our community come together for such a great event," she remarked. "The success of this day is a testament to the collaborative efforts of our local government and charitable organisations."

Also in attendance were Cllr Gemma Hemsley and Cllr Marjorie Chambers, who joined in the day's activities and interacted with constituents. Their presence underscored the Town Council's commitment to supporting family-friendly, accessible events for Ashington residents.

Cllr Hemsley commented "It was an absolutely fantastic day seeing those in our local community coming together to support two amazing charities - The British Heart Foundation and The Stephen Carey Foundation. The sun was shining and there were smiles in all directions. It was particularly nice to see the Hirst Welfare back in use and residents spending time in the newly refurbished cafe. Thank you to the wansbeck wanderers walking football for hosting such a fabulous event".

As the sun set on a day filled with laughter, friendly competition, and community spirit, it was clear that the Hirst Welfare Family Fun Day and Walking Football Festival had not only met but exceeded expectations. The event stood as a shining example of how local initiatives can bring people together and create lasting memories for all involved.
