Ashington Community Fair Day 2024 Celebrates Success Despite Rain

The town of Ashington came alive on Sunday 7th July, as residents and visitors alike gathered for the annual Ashington Community Fair Day. Despite heavy rainfall later in the day, the event was hailed as a resounding success by organisers and attendees.

Officially opened by Civic Head Councillor Caroline Ball, the fair featured a diverse lineup of entertainment and activities. The main stage, provided by Guerilla PA & Events, and supported by Koast Radio, was managed by Councillor Graeme Wright, and showcased performances by local favourites Mike Memphis and the Memphis Mafia Band, Ruby and the Mystery Cats, and STAN the Band. A highlight of the day was the Newbiggin by the Sea Choir, who delivered a spirited performance even as the rain began to fall.

The fair offered something for everyone, with Gladwin's Ballet & Stage School presenting a captivating dance performance, Ashington Sea Cadets demonstrating their training techniques, and Control & Move Fitness CIC impressing the crowd with acrobatic displays. Children were delighted by the presence of beloved characters Pudsey Bear and Sonic the Hedgehog, portrayed by Councillor Gemma Hemsley and Gary, respectively.

Various community groups and organisations set up stalls, including the Ashington WI with a popular tea tend, Pride Action North’s Youth Zone and inflatable disco dome, and the Newcastle United Foundation. The Army also had a presence, alongside local artisans like Alison from Whistle Art Stop. Captain Raggy Beard entertained visitors, while Richardson's Amusements provided traditional fair attractions and a special visit from the walk-about T Rex.

Sharon, the event coordinator, expressed gratitude to all involved, highlighting the efforts of fellow officers Mark, Gary, Stephen, and Alan in ensuring the day ran smoothly. Special mention was made of Ryan, who attended on his birthday to show support.

Ashington Town Council emphasized their commitment to fostering community spirit through such gatherings and announced that a video showcasing the day's activities would be released.

Despite the weather taking a turn later in the day, the resilience and enthusiasm of Ashington's residents shone through, demonstrating the strong sense of community that defines the town. The success of this year's Community Fair Day has set a high bar for future events, with anticipation already building for next year's celebration.
