Tribute to Sir Bobby Charlton

Tribute to Sir Bobby Charlton

Ashington Town Council wish to express our deepest gratitude and admiration for Sir Bobby Charlton, and condolences to his family following today's announcement of his death. As one of Ashington's most famous sons, Sir Bobby brought great pride and inspiration to our community through his outstanding football career. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time.

Born in 1937 right here in Ashington, Bobby Charlton showed exceptional talent for the game of football from a very young age. He joined Manchester United's youth team in 1953 and went on to make his first team debut in 1956 at the age of 19. Over the next 17 years, Bobby Charlton would go on to become a club legend, making 758 appearances for Manchester United and scoring 249 goals, which remains a club record to this day.

His contributions extended far beyond his club career. Bobby Charlton was a key member of England's 1966 World Cup winning team, scoring twice in the final to help England lift the Jules Rimet trophy for the first and only time in the nation's history. For England, he earned 106 caps and scored 49 goals in total, another record that has yet to be surpassed.

Beyond football, Sir Bobby's commitment to charitable endeavors, such as his work with UNICEF, showcases his generosity and compassion. He made a positive impact on countless lives, and for that, we are truly grateful. While he enjoyed tremendous success on the pitch, Sir Bobby conducted himself with dignity, modesty and class throughout his career. He was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 1965 at the height of his playing career, and later knighted in 1994 once he retired from football.

On behalf of Ashington Town Council and our community, we want to express our deepest admiration and gratitude for the incredible contributions Sir Bobby made to football. His journey from Ashington to becoming one of the greatest players of all time is inspirational. Rest in Peace Sir Bobby.
