Perfect Day for the Miners Picnic

Thank you to everyone who turned out for the Northumberland Miners Picnic on Saturday 10th June.

The Miners Memorial Service started off the days activities at 10.30am, with a welcome and prayers from Ashington Churches together followed by local MP Ian Lavery who gave a rousing account of past picnics and how miners lived.

The Civic Head Cllr Victor Bridges laid a wreath on behalf of the residents of Ashington, as well as;

  • National Union of Mineworkers Northumberland Area – Mr Jim Hately
  • Leader of Ashington Town Council – Cllr. John Tully

  • National Union of Mineworkers – General Secretary Mr Chris Kitchen
  • Leader of Northumberland Labour Party – Cllr Scott Dickinson
  • Wansbeck CLP – Mark Fitton
  • Ashington Labour Party Branch – Louis Brown
  • Ashington Mineworkers Federation – Mr Hughie Gallagher
  • National Union of Mineworkers Lynemouth Branch – Mrs Kathie Kelly
  • Choppington Labour Party Branch
  • Northumberland Aged Miners Homes Association – Miss Olivia Taylor
  • Durham Miners’ Association – Mr John Dunn
  • Newbiggin Town Council
  • Browell Smith & Co – Mr Stephen Browell
  • Woodhorn Museum – Part of Museums Northumberland

There was a full line up of bands and choirs to keep those who attended entertained throughout the day, with a big thank you to Bread and Butter Theatre and theBrass Bands: Ashington CollieryEllington CollieryBedlington Brass and Jayess Newbiggin for getting the party started at the Northumberland Miners Picnic.
