Northumbria Safer Parks – Hirst Park, Ashington

The Police and Crime Commissioner, Kim McGuinness, has secured funding to improve the safety of the public, particularly women, girls, and people from marginalised groups, in public parks across Northumbria.

The vision for the Safer Parks Northumbria Project is:

“To make public spaces, specifically parks, safer and more inclusive for women, girls and marginalised groups. To do this we aim to encourage earlier reporting to understand the problem, solve the issue by co-designing solutions with owners of public parks, take a Public Health Approach to attitudinal change and use the evidence of what works to scale the approach.”

We know that this is an important issue to our communities, and as part of this project, we are working with Newcastle University to establish how safe people feel when using our parks and what worries you have when using them. We will then use this information to create a Northumbria Safer Parks Standard to assess the safety of these public spaces in our region.

We would love to hear from you as part of this research – please register to attend our online focus groups, ran by Connected Voice, on behalf of the OPCC and Newcastle University.
