A Workers Memorial Day event took place place in Ashington on Saturday (29 April).

A public meeting was held at the Elephant Public House and included guest speakers Trevor Burden and Joyce McAndrew of the UCU.

After the meeting a wreath laying ceremony took place at the Workers' Memorial Garden, at North Seaton Cemetery, which was well attended. Local MP's Ian Lavery and Ronnie Campbell attended and both gave a short addresses. Mr Lavery highlighted that many workers from the local area, who had lost their lives in the workplace, were laid to rest in North Seaton Cemetery.

Music for the event was provided by Northumbrian Piper Bev Palin.

The event was organized by the South East Northumberland Trades Union Council.
