Ashington Town Council has recently made a grant of £700 to the Parkhead & Wansbeck Powersports group.
The grant will support improvements to the power lifting platform and assist with the purchase of new gym equipment at the groups base, at the Hirst Welfare Centre, on Alexandra Road.
The Parkhead & Wansbeck Powersports group provide a range of health and fitness activities for members, including a significant number of people with disabilities, with the aim of building confidence and self-esteem. The group currently has over 700 members and a focus for its future work will be encouraging more BAME residents to access activities.
Mr Fred Mackenzie, Chair of the Parkhead & Wansbeck Powersports Group, said ‘We believe the group has an important role to play in providing low cost, fitness activities at our gym and we really value Ashington Town Council’s support. The investment will ensure that we have fully fit for purpose facilities and equipment for members to access when the current restrictions are eased. Over the years we have organised a range of powerlifting events including British and European Championships and the Special Olympics as well as creating 49 British, European, Commonwealth and World Champions. If anyone would like more information on the work of the group please get in touch'.
In addition to Parkhead & Wansbeck Powersports, the Town Council has also recently funded Koast Radio and Cambois Rowing Club, through the grants scheme, to support their respective activities in the town.
Cllr. Matthew Cuthbert, Leader of Ashington Town Council, said ‘The Town Council is pleased to have recently supported a number of organisations who are doing much to improve the quality of life of residents.
