The Butokokan Judo Club are celebrating after receiving funding from Ashington Town Council.

The Club are based at YMCA Northumberland, in Ashington, and provide judo activities two nights a week in the town.

The Club has grown in numbers in recent years and now has over 40 children regularly taking part in activities as well as a good number of older members. The grant of £1,000 from the Town Council will allow volunteers to train as coaches as well validating the existing coaches with the British Judo Association.

In the picture is the Civic Head of Ashington, Cllr. Marjorie Chambers, who went along to present the cheque to members of the Club.

Mr Neil Hedley, Treasurer of the Club, said ‘We really appreciate the support from the Town Council. The Club has grown in recent years and the funding will allow us to maintain and develop the activities we provide for young people in Ashington as well as adhering to the latest rules and guidelines.  The benefits of Judo are well known through developing physical fitness and self-confidence, controlling emotions and building meaningful relationships with others’.  

Cllr. Marjorie Chambers added ‘The Butokokan Judo Club are one of a number of organisations in the town who are providing good quality and healthy activities for our young people. The Town Council is delighted to support the work of the Club in developing the skills of volunteer coaches which is vital to the successful running of the Club'.

A number of successful Judoka have visited the Club over the past few years to pass on their expertise, most notably Team GB's Ashley McKenzie (Two Time Olympian), Frazer Chamberlain (Multi European Medal Winner) & Owen Livesey (Commonwealth Champion) as well as a visit from Team USA's Kayla Harrison the two time Olympic Champion!

The sessions take place on a Monday and Friday evening, at YMCA Northumberland, commencing at 6.00pm. The Club also provides activities in Newbiggin by the Sea.
