Ashington Town Team, with funding from the Celebrate Lottery fund, held an event to celebrate the inspirational women of Ashington on Saturday (25 March).

There has been a great deal said and written about the men from Ashington and rightly so. However, this event celebrated the inspirational women of Ashington from sports heroes such as Olympic gold medalist Katherine Copeland, football’s famous mother Cissie Charlton, Kelly McDougal, Kath Dickinson, businesswomen Natalie Baldry, Dawn Watts, Jacqui Henderson CBE,  campaigners Lisa Dunn, Julie Carr and missionary Mary Laidlow and many, many more.

Over 90 inspirational women from Mams and Grandmas to volunteers, nurses, teachers and community workers were presented with a certificate recognising them as an inspirational Ashington woman by the Mayor of Ashington, Cllr. Avril Chisholm. In the picture are some of the women at the event and we thank Adam Richardson, of Ashington Camera Club, for the image.

The day started with musical entertainment from the Doo Wop Dollies, Ami Vaziri and the Youth Harmony Choir. The weather was glorious and people crowded on Station Road to see the presentation and to browse around the quality market, enjoy the funfair rides and get their facepainted. This event also kicks off the monthly market in Ashington which will be held on the last Saturday of every month, during 2017, on Station Road as part of Ashington's 150th Anniversary celebrations.

The Inspirational Ashington Women were also showcased in a Digital & Photography exhibition held on Wansbeck Square with recorded interviews from Cissie Charlton and Bothal Primary school children. The amazing stories of these women and their photograph were displayed.

Cllr. Avril Chisholm said 'In a turbulent world it is inspiring to know that there are so many good role models in our town, from great Mams and Grandmas, to brave girls and women fighting cancer to women who have dedicated their life to working for their community and women who have challenged the stereotypical roles and become great leaders, sports people and businesswomen'.

The next monthly market will take place on Saturday 29 April and will be teenager themed.
