The Northumberland Miners' Picnic took place on Saturday (9 June) as the crowds enjoyed the entertainment in the summer sun.

The traditional event has been running for more than 150 years and fittingly takes place at Woodhorn Museum which is home to the Pitmen Painters.

The event commenced with the poignant Miners' Memorial Service, at 11am, led by the Rev. Michael Hedley, and featured an address from Mr Ian Lavery MP. Music was provided by the united brass bands including the Miners Hymn ‘Gresford’. Wreaths were then laid remembering all miners who worked in the Northumberland Coalfield.

An afternoon of entertainment was provided by brass bands, the Eliot Smith Dance Group, The Baghdaddies and a special performance by Martin Stephenson & the Daintees. In an event for all the family there will also be other entertainment including street theatre and circus performances!

The event was supported by Ashington Town Council.
