Ashington Town Council has set aside funding to improve the Christmas lighting features in the town centre every year.

The Town Council has worked with a number of schools in the town to provide an annual competition to design new Christmas lighting features. There are now over twenty designs within the Christmas lighting that have been designed by the town's youngsters.

In recent years the Town Council has taken the lead in organising the Christmas Lights Switch-On with support from local community organisations, businesses and Northumberland County Council. Activities have included a range of family entertainment, fairground rides and market stalls.

In 2013 the Switch-On was carried out by well-known TV actor Tim Healy and 2015 saw football and music legends Jack Charlton and Lindisfarne doing the honours. In 2017 popular BBC TV presenter Colin Briggs led the Switch-On with Ashington children who had won the Christmas lighting feature competition that year.

If you are a local business or community group who would like to become involved in the switch-on event please call 01670 620 533 / 624 520.
