A worldwide audience may have tuned in to watch the Oscars on Sunday but Ashington held its own Oscar ceremony this week.

Woodhorn Park Care Home, on Woodhorn Road, held its own ceremony for residents and staff. Olivia Coleman and Rami Malek may have won awards for their roles in The Favourite and the Queen classic Bohemian Rhapsody but the winners in Ashington included best comedian, best knitter and best participant!

Ashington’s Civic Head, Cllr. Marjorie Chambers, went along to support the event and helped award the prizes. Cllr. Chambers said ‘It is good to see the Care Home organise events of this nature and seeing the residents being active and fully enjoying themselves with the staff.’

Woodhorn Park is a purpose-built care home for frail older people and for people living with dementia, based in the centre of Ashington. Anna Foster, the activities co-ordinator at the home, adds ‘The ceremony was a fun event for residents and staff and we appreciate Cllr. Chambers coming along and giving her support. We believe activities of this nature are really beneficial to our residents and it was great to see everyone enjoying themselves.’

In recent weeks the Care Home has organised an event to mark Chinese New Year, held a karaoke afternoon and is now planning an event for Easter.
