Ashington to Explore New Skate Park at People's Park

Ashington Town Council are excited to announce plans to evaluate the feasibility of creating a new skate park and scooter facility at People's Park in Ashington.

The proposed project, brought forward by ward Cllrs Lynne Grimshaw, Matthew Cuthbert and Bob Walkinshaw, aims to provide a state-of-the-art recreational space for local youth, fostering an active lifestyle and encouraging participation in skateboarding and scootering – skateboarding having recently gained Olympic status.

Skateboard GB recently announced the six skateboarders who will represent Great Britain in the first ever Olympic Qualifier Series (OQS), five of the six are 16 or under. Read the press release using the link below, 3rd March 2024.

"We are thrilled to be working alongside Northumberland County Council to potentially bring this exciting amenity to Ashington," said Cllr Lynne Grimshaw, Ward Cllr and Chair of the Finance and General Services Committee that approved a feasibility study should commence. "A new skate and scooter park would not only promote physical activity but also serve as a vibrant community hub for young people to come together, socialise, and develop their skills."

The feasibility study, to be led by Stephen Humphrey, Assets and Development Manager, supported by the Council’s Neighbourhood Services Officer, Ryan Appleby, a keen skater himself, will comprehensively assess potential site locations within People's Park, taking into account factors such as size, accessibility, existing infrastructure, and compatibility with surrounding land uses. Community consultation will be a key component, ensuring that the design and features of the skate and scooter park align with the needs and preferences of local skaters and scooter enthusiasts.

"Engaging with the youth of Ashington is of utmost importance to us," said Stephen Humphrey. "We want to create a space that caters to their interests and provides a safe, inclusive environment for them to pursue their sport."

Northumberland County Council, which own People's Park, is exploring the possibility of leasing land to Ashington Town Council on which they can develop a new skate facility.

Cabinet Member for Looking After Our Environment, Councillor Colin Horncastle said: “We look forward to working together on this potential project and supporting these first steps towards developing a new skate facility.

"Providing quality recreational amenities for young people is a priority and we know the positive impact it can have on their lives."

The project may be eligible for external funding opportunities, given the Olympic recognition of skateboarding and scootering. Ashington Town Council and Northumberland County Council are committed to exploring all possible avenues to bring this exciting initiative to fruition.

Once the feasibility study and consultation are complete, Ashington Town Council will be presented with the findings and recommendations, outlining the preferred site location, design concept, estimated costs, funding strategies, and possible implementation timeline. If the new facility is supported, the town council will then pursue a lease from landowner Northumberland County Council.
