Northumberland County Council to Submit Demolition Application for Wansbeck Square

Northumberland County Council to Submit Demolition Application for Wansbeck Square

Northumberland County Council (NCC) will be submitting an application for prior approval to demolish the buildings at Wansbeck Square in Ashington. This is the first step in redeveloping the site, with further plans still being finalised and coordination with Network Rail and Northern Powergrid ongoing.

As part of the prior approval application process, NCC has provided the required Site Notice indicating a proposed demolition start date of 1st July 2024. These notices will be posted around Wansbeck Square in the next couple of days. However, the actual demolition date may change depending on the approval timeline, particularly any requirements from Network Rail and Northern Powergrid.

NCC advised that they have been liaising with the businesses adjacent to Wansbeck Square about their redevelopment plans, and whilst 1st July is the target to begin demolition, updates will be provided if that timeline shifts.

The demolition is a critical first phase to clear the way for revitalising the Wansbeck Square area. Ashington Town Council will continue to share information from NCC with the community as redevelopment progresses.
