Build a Bat Box for Action for Insects

As part of our commitment to creating more insect-friendly spaces in Ashington, today's activity is all about providing homes for nature's pest controllers - bats!

Bats play a vital role in controlling insect populations by eating thousands of insects like mosquitoes and moths every night. However, loss of natural roosting spots like tree cavities has made it harder for bats to find suitable places to live and raise their young.

That's why today, with help from @NorthumberlandWildlifeTrust, we'll show you how to build a simple bat box to encourage these furry friends to take up residence in your garden. More bats means fewer insect pests munching on your plants!

Making a bat box is an easy woodworking project using just a few materials. Plus, it's a great way to get kids involved with conservation.

Once installed, be patient - it may take some time for bats to discover and move into their new digs. But soon your garden will have some new winged residents hard at work controlling insect pests naturally!

Don't forget to share pictures of your bat box and other insect-friendly projects at admin@ashingtontowncouncil.gov.uk. We'll send you free wildflower seeds and may feature your efforts in our ECO Fair video!

Small changes make a big difference when we all work together for insects. Stay tuned for tomorrow's tips on how to create a hedgehog hole.
