Town Council Approves Funding, Launches Annual Grants Program, Welcomes New Councillor

Ashington Town Council held its monthly Finance and General Services Committee meeting last night. The meeting began with a moment of silence to mark the sad passing of Councillor Vicki Brown, and a tribute by Chair, Cllr Lynne Grimshaw.

Annual Grant Aid Program Launched

The council will officially launch its Annual Grant Aid program for the 2024/25 financial year tomorrow. Updated application documents and criteria will be posted on the town council's website along with a timetable for submissions. Local organisations providing valuable services and programs are encouraged to apply for funding, especially those serving individuals from underrepresented groups, and those with specific characteristics protected by law.

Updates from Citizens Advice and Foodbank

The committee agreed to release the final payment from the current Annual Grant Fund to both Citizens Advice Northumberland and the Wansbeck Valley Foodbank. Abi Conway (CEO Citizens Advice Northumberland) was in attendance and answered a raft of questions as well as delivering an update on services delivered and the money brought back into the town via benefits and help with debt.

As well as providing advice on many matters, Citizens Advice helps residents understand those benefits they are entitled to claim. The Council will help to promote the online benefits calculator recommended by Citizens Advice, and in-person assistance available.

The Wansbeck Valley Foodbank continues addressing food insecurity having supported 6,134 individuals in Ashington over 2023. Their report, provided by Peter Robinson (Trustee), highlighted the ongoing community need set against a drop in food donations.

New Central Ward Councillor Seated

Paul Wright was officially added as the new councillor for the Central Ward and was welcomed to his first meeting by fellow councillors.

Other Actions

The Northumberland Miners Picnic event held at Woodhorn Museum received financial support. Planning started for a new Detached Youth working group to take forward the Council’s desire to continue detached youth provision in the town.
