At an event at Ashington Cricket Club, on behalf of the residents, the Town Council honoured ICC World Cup 2019 winning cricketer Mark Wood with a Citizens Award.

The event took place on Bank Holiday Monday (26 August) as part of the Cricket Club’s wider celebrations for Mark’s efforts.  Mark commenced his junior cricket cricket career at the Club before gaining a professional cricket contract with Durham CC in 2011. In 2015, Mark made his England test debut and was a member of the team that won the Ashes series later that year; Mark bowled the winning ball in the fourth test match of the series!

 In July of this year, Mark was a member if the England team that won the World Cup in one-day cricket. In doing so, Mark became a member of an illustrious Ashington Club of Sporting World Cup Winners...the only other members for 53 years being Jack and Bobby Charlton!

The well-attended event in glorious summer weather included competitive junior cricket matches, a question and answer with Mark on the World Cup campaign and photograph opportunities for the attendees with both Mark and the replica World Cup. Musical entertainment and celebrations also took place well into the evening.

The Ashington Citizens Award was presented to Mark by Cllr.Lawrence Henderson the Civic Head of Ashington; the Award presented to stated the due purpose as being:

‘In recognition of your outstanding personal achievement as a member of the England Cricket Team successful in winning the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2019.’

Cllr. Henderson  said ‘The Award is rightly given in recognition of Mark’s outstanding contribution to the successful World Cup campaign and in particular the final itself, widely recognised as the greatest one-day cricket match ever.  Ashington should be rightly proud that it now has three World Cup winning sports stars that come from the town covering both football and cricket. It’s an unbelievable achievement, likely to be unequalled by any other town in the country and it truly epitomises the town’s deserved reputation for producing sports men and women of the very highest calibre'.
