On Sunday (9 September) the Hirst Park Bowls Club held the Ashington Hirst Celebratory Bowls Cup.

The competition commenced last year to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the town and to welcome Ashington Bowls Club, Alcan Bowls Club and Ashington Ladies Bowls Club to the facilities at Hirst Park following the closure of bowls facilities at the old Ashington Leisure Centre.  The competition has now become a welcome annual addition to the local lawn bowls calendar.

The competition is supported by Ashington Town Council and the Clubs compete on the greens at Hirst Park.

The winners of the 2018 competition were Mr Dobinson, of Hirst Park Bowling Club, and Mr Nelson of Alcan Bowling Club.  The Deputy Civic Head of Ashington, Cllr. Lawrence Henderson, went along to present the trophy.

A history of lawn bowls is well established at Hirst Park with the Hirst Park Bowling Club founded in 1916, the year after the Park was opened.  If anyone is interested in taking part in bowling activities, at the Park, whether experienced or a beginner, pop into the Hirst Pavilion or chat to the Park Keeper who will be able to advise of activities.
