The Ashington Fell 'em Doon Festive 5K Run took place on Sunday (8 December).

The event was organised by the Ashington Hirst Running Club and took place in Ashington Community Woodland.  Over 300 people took part and the Woodland provided a fantastic location for the event in the winter sunshine.

The winner of the race was Mr Chris Snowball of Wakefield District Harriers and the first female home was Ms Amy Fuller from Elswick Harriers. The event aims to encourage people to take up running, whatever their ability, with the run building in popularity year on year.

The Ashington Hirst Running Club was formed in 2014 and now has over 150 members with regular activities take place at the Bothal Primary Upper School, on High MarketActivities take place on a Tuesday, Thursday and Friday evenings with the school’s facilities providing an excellent base with a running track and gym for fitness classes.

New members are always welcome whatever their ability and the Club has recently launched a ‘Couch to 5k Programme’ that has encouraged 30 people to take up running. Full details of activities can be found at the Club’s website – link below.

Ashington Town Council was pleased to financially support the event and the Civic Head of Ashington, Cllr. Lawrence Henderson went along to present the prizes to the winners.

Henderson said ‘The Town Council is delighted to support the Running Club and the Festive Race today. The benefits of regular exercise are well recognised and it is great to have the Club providing some fantastic activities in Ashington for residents as well as encouraging people to the town for this race’. Iain adds ‘We really appreciate the support of the Town Council and we would welcome anyone to come along to our regular activities’.  

Prior to and following the event members of the Club litter picked the course through the woodland.
